Beth Neal -  Going for Gold…. as a Young Ambassador Beth Neal, Year 10, is pictured with Michelle Robinson, a Commonwealth Games long jump competitor, at a Youth Sport Trust conference at Exeter Rugby Club on 1st October 2009.  She was representing the South Dartmoor School Sport Partnership as a Young Ambassador where she was selected over other nominees from across our seven secondary schools.  Beth and Alf, (also pictured and from South Dartmoor Community College), will be ‘Gold’ Young Ambassadors and through the Sports Partnership Leadership Academy will be involved in promoting greater sports participation in the primary schools in the lead up towards the 2012 London Olympics. Beth’s skills as a competitor and a leader earned her the prestigious position within the Sports Partnership.  She is a member of a local gymnastics club and athletics club where she has given excellent commitment to training and competitions. She also completed the 35 mile Ten Tors last summer term.As a Sports Leader she has been part of various primary school festivals and events which have allowed her leadership skills to develop further and were noticed by the Sports Partnership team.

Beth is currently involved with the Sports Leaders Level 1 Award at Teign School where she will continue to have the opportunity to work more with the local feeder primary schools.

Sports Leadership Awards…. This year has Teign’s largest ever number of students following the Sports Leaders Level 1 Award, with over one hundred students registering with the leadership award and being involved in promoting sports participation. This is great news for all concerned; the students gain a valuable award and some unforgettable experiences and the PE Department/ Teign School can take advantage of so many trained up students to help to run primary sports events and school house matches.

‘Girls Active’ event at Plymstock School

Disc golf, X-Biking and Street Surfing were just a few of the different sports that Teign School girls enjoyed a taster of at the ‘Girls Active’ event at Plymstock School in Plymouth recently.

The event was organised by Plymstock School Sports Partnership to demonstrate the wide variety of sports on offer to girls and these were coached in a fun and friendly atmosphere.

Eighteen girls from Year 9 attended and they were given a choice of activities throughout the day which kept them active with barely any time to rest in between. Each activity lasted 40 minutes and was taught by local sports coaches who had brought their specialist equipment.

Teign School girls had a superb attitude to all the events, trying out the new sports with determination and enthusiasm.

A favourite for many was the Street Surfing which most managed to master the basics of moving forward and turning without too many incidents.

The dance mats activity could accommodate over 100 girls at a time and Teign’s Niamh G had the highest score in the ‘warm up’ event and Elyss C had the highest score in the main dance event.

Well done to all the girls that attended the day!

Young Playground Leaders Conference - March 2008
Young Leaders from Teign School travelled to Seal Hayne to participate in the Young Playground Leaders conference on 12th March.  Several primary schools from the Partnership brought children along, and enjoyed activities such as French Skipping, parachute, sharing playground games and wet play - which consisted of drawing their school logo on a large sheet, to take back to school to continue their design and colouring.

The conference finished with some joint games and a closing speech by Fiona Goodchild, event organiser.

Many thanks to the Young Leaders from Teign, who did a wonderful job of keeping the children active and involved in each activity.

Chudleigh Clean Sweep
The High 5 Netball squad from Chudleigh Primary School did exceptionally well last season; firstly by winning their league, beating teams in and around Newton Abbot, then winning two mid and end of seasons tournaments.  They next won an open cup match, where they had to beat two teams to get to the final and beat the same team in a champion's league final, to see who won the two leagues overall.

Chudleigh netballers consistently do well each year, but this year seems to be exceptional and the children should be proud of themselves.  The school encourages lots of after school sports and High 5 Netball is very popular for both girls and boys.  The year 3 and 4 team also did well to win all of their league games convincingly.

BISI festival Year 5&6 and Year 3&4 - 3rd and 10th October 2007

Students from the Upper School have run a new BISI (Badminton Into Schools Initiative) festival for the primary school children within our Learning Community. Year 11 Sports Leaders taught small competitive team games, such as aiming the shuttlecock into a bucket from different cone markers.

All our Sports Leaders have to be involved in coaching one hour of sport so that they complete the Sports Leaders Level 1 Award. Most of the Year 11’s have now completed this module and will be receiving their award shortly.

Fun Sailing at Paignton!  June 08
Year 7 pupils from Teign School, along with some from South Dartmoor and Keviccs, had a fun and enjoyable afternoon sailing at Paignton Sailing Club. The students practised their steering in Pico sailing dinghies while being towed through the harbour mouth to the beach. This was followed by paddling races, accompanied by much laughter!

Devon Youth Games - September 2007

Several Teign School students were selected to represent Teignbridge in the Devon Youth Games this year. This fantastic sporting event was held at the beginning of September- after being postponed in June because of the horrendous weather.

There were many different sports represented – including Street Sports and an Aquathlon (swim and run). Throughout the day there were different entertainments going on to keep everyone involved for example- students were invited to join in the street dance and playing in the junk band.

Volleyball: Jordan R. (Year 7)

Aquathlon: Laura S. (Year 8), Chloe R. (Year 8) and Louise M. (Year 10)

Netball: Emily H.(Year 9), Molly W. (Year9)

Indoor Athletics: Katie E. (Year 7)

Well done and thank you to the students who attended the trials and the event.

Coaching and Leadership Day - September 2007

Four students were selected to attend a Coaching and Leadership day at South Dartmoor Community College. These students were selected because of their proven ability in the selected sports activities. It is hoped that they will be able to offer coaching at some of the primary school events later on this year.

Holly G.and Georgia S. - Netball (Year 11)

Alex P.- Football (year 10)

Bradley C. - Dance(Year 10)

Well done to Holly G. who was the winner of her sport’s special award for enthusiasm and effort throughout the day. Holly wins tickets to attend a TeamBath Netball Superleague  home match.

Volunteer Marshalls

Students from the lower school are being encouraged to help out at local sports events as part of the Sports volunteering scheme. These eight Year 8 students spent a Sunday morning back in the Spring giving out the finishing prizes, taking the results to the record keeper and handing out cups of water and bananas to over 200 runners that took part in a local 10 mile race- the Teignbridge Ten’ organised by local running club Teignbridge Trotters.

Sports events rely heavily on people being willing to volunteer their time to make the events a success. There are lots of opportunities for students to help out, either in school house matches, primary school festivals, sports days or out of school activities such as local running events.
