Top Up Swimming - Summer 07

The summer term saw the first round of ‘TOP UP’ Swimming lessons for years 6, 7 and 8 pupils who are not very confident swimmers across the Partnership.

Jane Hushen and Cheryl Furler were in Coombeshead College delivering the course over a two week period.

During the first week a selection of pupils from Coombeshead had a daily two hour lesson. Jack L. and Tom G. both said they enjoyed the lessons but “the water was cold until they got used to it.”

In the second week year 6 pupils from Primary Schools within the Academic Council completed a second series of lessons.

Jane Hushen said the lessons were part of a Nationwide Scheme to ensure all year 6 pupils or above can swim 25m and have water confidence. She added: “Coombeshead pool is perfect for teaching, and in two or three lessons the students were as good as, or even better than, their peers.

Around the rest of the South Dartmoor Partnership year 6 pupils were given free places on half term and holiday swimming courses to try to help their water confidence and swimming ability. This scheme will be running again next year to really ensure we are all safe in the water.
