It has been a real inspiration working as a dance consultant in South Devon primary schools
this year . . .
The teachers that I have worked with have been as keen to develop their dance teaching skills
as the children have been to create dance-work and perform.
A lot of fun was had working in schools in the Dawlish area in the first part of the Spring term
on a performance project involving primary schools and Y10 and Y11 students from Dawlish Community College. The result
was a wonderful event sharing dances based on a diverse range of ideas from traditional tales, to the work of the artist 'Kandinsky',
to Hip Hop. On the performance day the Dawlish Community College Y11 students were involved in teaching the 'warm-up'
for the performers, and the whole event was documented on film by media students from the college.
It is always exciting and encouraging after projects like this one to hear positive responses
from participants - both students and teachers - who having not previously been involved in, or won-over by dance, have
now caught the dance 'bug'. There has always been a lot of passion and enthusiasm for dance in Devon and to see that
developing more and more within schools is heartening. Long may it continue to flourish.
